Hong Kong History Museum


Any trip to Hong Kong would not be complete without a visit to the Hong Kong History Museum. The museum building is a beautiful, modern building, filled with over 45,000 artifacts tracing the history of Hong Kong, the Southern Islands, and Southeastern Mainland China. The Hong Kong History Museum has different areas of emphasis, including archeology, the natural features of the area, and local anthropology.

Must See Exhibits
The Hong Kong Story, a permanent exhibit that traces the history of Hong Kong through a vast collection of artifacts. This fascinating exhibit is essential to anyone who wants to know the full history of this captivating island.

Hours
Closed on Tuesdays. Open Sunday 10-7, all other days 10-6

Admission
$10, group discounts available. Museum is free on Wednesdays. An additional fee may be charged for special exhibitions. Children under 4 are free.

What to expect
The museum is set up to take the visitor on a tour from the earliest prehistoric era in Hong Kong, through the modern reunification with China. The “Natural Environment” gallery explains how geologic forces created the landforms that make up modern day Hong Kong. The next gallery introduces Hong Kong’s first Neolithic residents, and demonstrates how they lived. Moving through time, the galleries take you into Hong Kong and China’s Dynastic periods, with artifacts from the Qin and Han dynasties. Other galleries introduce Chinese folk art and customs, and ways of living in the modern age. The museum supplements all of its exhibitions with film and multimedia components, and is a great place to visit for guests of all ages.

Special Facilities
Audio guides are available, along with toilets and elevator especially designed for guests with disabilities. Baby changing stations are available. There is no food service in the museum.

Other facilities
The Hong Kong History Museum operates five other facilities throughout Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence, The Dr. Sun Yat Sen Museum, the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum, the Law UK Folk Museum, and the Fireboat Alexander Grantham Exhibition Gallery. Hours and admission to these museums vary.
