There is an old saying that the Chinese will eat anything that moves. There is a lot of truth in that, as a tourist can find anything from cow’s stomach to fish eyes to roast dog – almost anything you can imagine and probably much more. In fact, there are somethings you probably don’t even to to imagine eating. Check out some of the strange dishes below.
Chicken Embryo
One strange dish which originates in the Nanjing region of China is Nanjing chicken embryo or maodan. This nutritious snack is actually fertilized chicken egg that has partly developed into a chick, or a half-chicken, half-egg hybrid. Eat them hard-boiled with a pinch of salt. Nanjing chicken embryo is sold by street vendors throughout China. They can be purchased for about 33 cents (USD) depending on the area of the country.
Scorpion Kebabs
Scorpion kebabs, said to remedy certain sicknesses, are another popular cuisine available as a snack or light meal. They are plucked from a large bucket, still alive, and fastened onto a kebab stick, then dispatched into an oil vat where they are deep-fried. They cost about 50 RMB, but there is no set price as bargaining is commonplace.
Squid Kebabs
If scorpions do not take your fancy, you can always try the less deviant variety of squid kebabs. The squid is barbecued and covered in sesame sauce, and, despite it being nearly fully intact, tastes and looks more like conventional exported Chinese we are accustomed to. Again, no set prices, but they can average about 50 RMB.
Goat Lungs
Goat lungs with red peppers skewer is another Chinese delicacy. They are prepared in a slow boil and seasoned with ginger and a variety of Chinese spices, and then eaten from a stick. They cost between 1 and 5 USD.
Dog Brain Soup
Dog brain soup is one of China’s favorite recipes. Don’t panic - you are not eating anyone’s pet ‘Spot,’ as these dogs are raised specifically for consumption, just like pigs or cattle in the West. Boil dog meat with thin soy paste, and add green onion, leek, stalk of taro, and perilla purple to kill the smell. Serve with fresh peppers and cucumbers. Average price runs at about 50 RMB, or 1.50 USD.
